Personal Reflections on Autism Education
Experience and Insights
Throughout my fifteen years teaching in autism classrooms, and more recently in a special school dedicated to autistic learners, I have gained a profound understanding of the distinctive dynamics that characterise these specialised settings. This wealth of experience has enabled me to recognise both the challenges and the opportunities inherent in supporting autistic students. My journey in autism education has been marked by a continuous process of learning, adaptation, and appreciation for the uniqueness of every classroom and learner.
Supporting Teachers in Transition
I am deeply conscious of the uncertainty and anxiety that teachers may experience when transitioning to an autism-focused environment. For many, the shift from mainstream teaching can be overwhelming, as the expectations and approaches differ significantly. Understanding these challenges, I am dedicated to sharing my experiences and offering support to other teachers who are beginning their journey in autism education. My goal is to help smooth this transition and empower them as they adapt to new methods and classroom dynamics.
Adapting Teaching Practices
Settling into the role of teacher and leader within an autism classroom often requires time and patience. It can be challenging to adjust established teaching styles from mainstream settings and to embrace the diverse learning approaches found in autism education. Becoming confident in this new environment is a gradual process, and acknowledging the need for change is an important step toward effective teaching.
Professional Development and Support
Completing both a MEd and an MSc in the areas of autism and behaviours, alongside many years of practical experience, has enabled me to create this series of webinars to assist teachers beginning in an autism classes. My purpose is to help prepare fellow professionals and equip them with the essential tools for working with autistic learners. Ultimately, we share a common aspiration: to do our very best for the students in our care.
