We will look at the elements of reading and what skills children need to develop in order to become competent, confident readers.

We will look at some commonly used programmes and discuss matching the correct programme to the child depending on areas of difficulty and how to prioritise areas of literacy to focus on in order to make maximum progress with intervention.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be enabled to:

• Identify and explain the key components of reading development, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• Evaluate commonly used reading programmes and interventions, considering their focus areas, structure, and suitability for different learners.
• Match reading interventions and strategies to individual learners needs based on assessment data and observed difficulties.
• Prioritise areas of need (e.g., decoding vs. comprehension) to guide targeted support and effective intervention planning.
• Use practical classroom strategies to reinforce key reading skills in both whole-class and small-group settings.

''I am a primary teacher working in schools for the past 20 years. I have completed many different courses around educating students with Additional Needs and I have significant and varied experience in the area also working in SET, Mainstream, HSCL, Special class teaching and as a SENCO. I have worked with many different schools nationwide planning various aspects of the Continuum of Support with them and planning provision in their school for students with additional needs. I believe wholeheartedly in the difference we can make in the lives of people with many additional needs through our understanding and our knowledge. I worked with the Dyslexia Association of Ireland for eight years, as a tutor on the SNA course with UCD, and as a lecturer with Hibernia College on the Inclusion and Diversity module with the PME students. I was awarded the IATSE Testimonial and Award for excellence in Support Teaching in 2017 when studying at University College Dublin and the Louise Madigan Bursary Award for research in education in 2021. I worked as a member of the ILSA Executive Committee.''
