This session will support secondary teachers and TY coordinators in delivering digital skills modules with or without a computer science background.
We’ll explore the Junior Cycle short courses in Coding and Digital Media Literacy, as well as options for Transition Year.
We’ll also share guidance on classroom management, inclusive progression from block to text-based coding, and resources available to schools.
Bio
Alan Joyce, the founder of Coding Ireland, is one of the leading figures in digital skills education in Ireland. With a rich background that includes a senior software engineering role at British Telecoms and a 15-year tenure as a director of Engine Solutions, a software development company collaborating with government bodies. Since founding Coding Ireland in 2018, Alan has successfully grown it into the largest coding and digital skills learning platform in Ireland, utilised by over 1,000 schools. Alan has personally delivered coding and STEM workshops in hundreds of classrooms and libraries throughout Ireland. In these sessions, he directly imparted his expertise to thousands of students, significantly contributing to their understanding and skills in digital technology and STEM.
Ciarán Fay is an experienced primary school teacher and digital education specialist with a strong focus on inclusive STEM learning. He holds a Bachelor of Education from Dublin City University (2019) and a Master of Science in Digital Marketing and Data Analytics from South East Technological University (2023).Ciarán joined Coding Ireland in 2023 as Head of Educational Outreach, where he designs and delivers nationwide digital skills workshops and teacher training programmes. He has facilitated coding and STEM workshops for students of all ages across Ireland, supporting both primary and postprimary schools.He has represented Coding Ireland at national education events, including the Oide Computer Science Conference, where he presented best practices in teacher-led STEM engagement.
