Most teachers will attest to the fulfilment that their daily engagement with their students brings to them. However, negative behaviour and increased levels of anxiety amongst the student cohort can present real and significant challenges. This course offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their approach to developing a positive classroom environment where their students feel capable, connected and safe.
This course is ideal for those embarking on a career in teaching, experienced teachers looking for an opportunity to refresh, and teacher leaders such as class tutors and year heads.
The course will address the following themes:
- An introduction to the societal context in which teachers practice with the aim of helping participants understand some of the causes of negative behaviour that they encounter daily.
- The culture of schools is significant in influencing teachers’ practice. Whole-school issues that both impact on student behaviour and influence how teachers engage with the school structures such as the Code of Behaviour will be discussed.
- The importance of positive student teacher relationships and the creation of a positive classroom environments will be examined
- A ‘toolkit’ of practical strategies to minimise and respond to low level misbehaviour in the classroom will be presented.
- Strategies to help students presenting with high level challenging behaviour will be shared
