Emotional Regulation is the process of consciously managing your own emotions, in order to achieve personal growth, fulfilment and well-being (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). It is an extremely complex task, particularly in professions which have a high level of emotional labour, such as teaching.

At its heart, teaching is a social and emotional activity and the typical teaching day can involve up to 1,000 social interactions (Holmes, 2005), many of which may involve trying to manage the strong emotions of students or parents, as well as resolve conflict and deal with the inevitable daily frustrations and disappointments that are part and parcel of our job. This process involves minute-by-minute decision making which can often lead to a roller coaster of different emotions, both positive and negative.  Having strategies to support our own emotional regulation is therefore vital.

This webinar will provide an overview of emotional regulation and offer teachers several strategies to help to nurture it, in order to support their own well-being.

Learning Outcomes

That participants will:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of the concept of emotional regulation
  2. Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of emotional regulation for teacher well-being
  3. Gain a number of strategies to nurture their own emotional regulation to support personal well-being
